Click on an image to enlarge
This is a beautiful non-excavated Civil War Confederate rifleman's coat button. This is the style that was run through the blockade from the firm of Hammond, Turner & Bates of Manchester England. On the back of the button it has the clear "MANCHESTER H.T.&B." backmark. The original shank is intact and in fine shape. The face has the large block letter "R" with the lines going across it which is why it is called the "Lined R" by collectors. This "R" denotes the rifleman branch of Confederate service. This pattern is listed in Albert's button book as CS201 and in Tice's button book as CSR200a1. This is a beautiful button that would be a superb addition to any collection.
