This is a fine looking original non-excavated coat size Confederate cavalry button. This is the style listed as CS127 in Albert's book and CSC203a1 in Tice's Book. These are referred to by collectors as the "Lined C" because the block style "C" on the face of the button has lines across it. It has fine detail to the face of the button with the "C' showing up very clearly. On the back of the button it has the original back and shank intact. This is the version that that has the "COURTNEY & TENNENT" backmark. As Tice states in his book the other backmarks are common but this one is tough to find. Courtney & Tennent were retailers located in Charleston, South Carolina and they imported fine pieces from Europe to sell to the well-to-do Southern soldiers. It is believed that the actual maker was probably Smith, Kemp & Wright. This is a great looking Confederate cavalry button that is nice enough for any collection.
