Veteran Timeframe Reprint of the July 2nd 1863 Vicksburg Citizen Printed on Wallpaper
Click on an image to enlarge
This is a very neat piece! While Vicksburg was under siege there was a local paper, The Daily Citizen" that kept on printing a newspaper as long as they could. When they ran out of regular paper they printed the news on wallpaper. That is until the city was taken by the Yankees. On that fateful day July 4th 1863 the paper was also taken over by the Yankees. They printed the last issue on wallpaper and those immediately became collector's items. The news in the paper is the Confederate news dated July 2, 1863 except for the small addition in the lower right hand corner. This is one of the ones that was printed during the veteran era as a curiosity. Many of them were sold to the veterans as a memento. This one was printed by B. Mason of Victor, Iowa and it is so marked int he lower right hand corner. The paper displays well and as you can see it has the old Scotch tape repairs along the fold seam separations. The Confederate Printed ones bring several thousand but this one is just after that printing and you can own it for $195.00. This is a neat paper that you seldom see offered.
