ROUGH & READY! Armed Infantry Officer 6th Plate Tintype of a Soldier
Click on an image to enlarge
This is a great looking 6th plate tintype image of a Civil War Union cavalryman in his shell style military coat. These tintype images were produced by applying the image to a thin sheet of tin, hence the name. This is the size that is known to collectors as the sixth plate size. It measures about 2.75 inches by 3.25 inches in overall size. This image is vividly clear as you can see. The image shows the seated view of the soldier. He wears his shell style military coat and has the cap on his head with the brim turned up. On his hat you can see the infantry hunting horn insignia. Cradled in his arm he has the foot officer's version of sword. That lets us know that he was an officer. Around his waist you can see the eagle sword belt buckle and you can see the shoulder strap clearly visible. The image has some scratches but is still very clear. The image is in a nice complete gutta percha case. This is a great looking tintype image of an armed infantryman.
