Excellent Rifled Type III Sabot Long Pattern 30# Parrott Case Shot
Click on an image to enlarge
This is a nice excavated artillery cannon shell for the Parrott style rifled cannon. This is the larger size that went in the gun referred to by collectors as the 30 pounder Parrott. The bore of the gun would have been 4.2 inches in diameter. This is the pattern illustrated on page #285 of the great heavy artillery shell book by my friend Jack bell. He calls it a U.S. 4.2-inch Parrot Type III case shot shell. This one is case shot and is very heavy. It has the remnants of the zinc Parrott time fuse in the top of the shell. The shell body displays well from all angles as you can see. At the base of the shell it has the entire brass sabot intact with a nice look all over. The sabot has the clear lands and grooves from where it was shot out of the cannon. This is a nice solid looking 30# Parrott case shot shell with full sabot intact.
