Original "Pigtail" of Twisted Tobacco from the Civil War Era
Click on an image to enlarge
Here is a neat personal piece from the Civil War era. It is an original twist of tobacco. Tobacco was an enormously important sutler ware, as many soldiers felt they could not do without it. Chewing tobacco was popular, and many soldiers developed a dependency upon it. It was easy to carry and could be enjoyed no matter what the soldier was doing: marching, standing guard, or camping in the rain. These "pigtail" curls or "twist" could be chewed or smoked. This large example measures approximately 5-1/2 inches by 2 inches in overall size.
