Click on an image to enlarge
This is an attractive non-excavated Civil War era Confederate "Snake" style belt buckle. These were imported from England through the Union naval blockade and often worn by Confederate officers. They have the distinctive double headed snake in the center that joins the 2 belt loops. These Civil War excavated versions have the round belt loops that have the attachment rings soldered directly onto the snake side of the belt loops. This one has a beautiful color all over with a nice dark golden tone to the brass patina. It is very similar to this pattern is used a plate #199 in Steve Mullinax' Confederate Belt Buckle Book. It is missing the keeper portion and is priced accordingly. It just needs one to match it to finish out a great buckle. What remains is accompanied by an original brass belt length adjuster. This is a great looking half of a non-excavated snake pattern belt buckle with adjuster.
