This is a good looking piece for the money! It is an original kepi style military hat from the late 1800's. This one would date from about 1880 or 1890 and is therefore slightly after the Civil War but it still displays well. It has a good looking dark color to the wool with some repairs and mothing to the side of the hat as you can see in the pictures. It has one of the original buttons on the side that are New Jersey National Guard state seal buttons that were worn by the men of the Indian War time frame. It has the original leather style chin strap intact. The inside of the hat has the nice original liner and sweatband remaining. It has the traces of the impressed maker's mark which is from the Newark, New Jersey maker, W.D. Cowan. This is a nice display Indian War kepi from New Jersey!
