It isn't often that you see Civil War dated newspapers from the state of California. The state wasn't heavily populated so there weren't a lot of people to sell the papers to in the first place. Those that were printed didn't have a high survival rate. This is an original and the fragile paper has some tears and chips round the edges but the print is still very legible and very interesting. This one is dated from March 1st 1862. It has lots of articles including the news of the Battle of Somerset, Kentucky also known as the Battle of Mill Springs. There is also an article on the battle of Fort Donelson. It states that "Southern ppsper give exaggerated accounts of the Federals killed at Fort Donelson. The Lynchburg (VA) Republican estimates the loss at from 6,000 to 10,000. This is a nice original Civil War newspaper from California.
