Neat Original Civil War Era Traveling Wooden Lapdesk with COmpartments
Click on an image to enlarge
This is a neat piece that we just picked up! It is an original Civil War traveling lap desk. As for the desk itself it is the nice size measuring 12-3/4ths inches by 8-1/2 inches across the top and stands 4-3/8ths inches tall. It was very well made having the simple lock on the front and the key is missing in action. It has seen quite a bit of use but was never abused. The inside has the 2 compartments as well as the small drawer lid that still opens and closes. On the inside of the lid it has 2 images that were trimmed out of the newspaper named "BALLOU'S PICTORIAL" dated from August of 1858. One has the scene of the ships and the other show fort Sumter. This will make a fine piece to put in your campsite display.
