This is an interesting original document that is dated from 1852. It is from St. Mary's County in Maryland. It shows that W. Goodland had been paid $5.00 for "...arresting Negro Carter and bringing to jail". What is interesting is that at the bottom it states that it was "Cost in Case ... & Slaves of H.G. Hayden." This let us know that the case was about a captured runaway slave. The paper is 7-3/4ths inches by 6 inches in overall size and the fine old brown ink on blue reed paper and it is clear and very legible. It is an interesting document from the antebellum South.
