Post War Conversion of a Civil War Soldier's Canteen With Cover by Jewett 1863 & 1864

This is an fine original Civil War soldier's canteen with a neat post war alteration. This is the classic smooth side pattern that was carried by soldiers on both sides of the Civil War. This is the pattern with the pewter spout at the top and this one is present and in fine shape. It even has the original stopper chain present after all of the years but the cork is missing. On the side of the spout you can see the maker's mark that is still visible that reads "A JEWETT". It was made by the firm of Albert Jewett & Company of New York City. Jewett held contracts to make canteens for the Government in 1863 and 1864. What is interesting about this canteen is that after it's Civil War service, they took it back in and replaced the strap loops with brass triangles so they use the more "modern" design of shoulder sling. That is a cool alteration and it is priced right at $125.00.
