Great Looking French Model 1842 Brass Handled Civil War Saber Bayonet
Click on an image to enlarge
This one is a very attractive Civil War era saber bayonet. This is the model that would have fit a Civil War era 2 band rifles or musket. It officially fits the French and Liege made Model 1842. This pattern is described on pages 172 to 175 of the book by Noe & Serbaroli entitled European Bayonets of the American Civil War. It has the full-length 22 inch blade and the bayonet measures 27 inches overall. At the base of the blade it has the maker's mark of "S&K". This is the stamping that lets us know that the bayonet was made by the Philip J. Schnitzler & W.B.S. Kirschbaum of Germany. They were in business from 1811 until 1864 and made many high quality weapons for the American Civil War. The cast brass handle has a fine look with the original locking spring intact. The iron cross guard is complete with a fine look as you can see. This is a very fine displaying Civil War era saber bayonet.
