Excellent Non-Excavated Type II Absterdam Shell 1862 Patent Date
Click on an image to enlarge
This is a great looking and neat shell that won't break the bank. It is the shell referred to by collectors as the type II Absterdam shell. This is the pattern illustrated on page 69 of the 1993 edition of the Dickey & George shell book. This one is a non-excavated version and it still has a nice amount of the paint present. The top band of lead has been removed somewhere along the line as is so often the case with the shells. It still has the base sabot present. At one time it would had the 1862 patent mark on the base. At one time it would have read "PATNTED S&CO AUGUST 12TH 1862". It should be noted that these are probably made after the Civil War even though they have the 1862 patent mark. There are no known Civil War battlefield recovered shells of this pattern which is why it is priced this low for a non-excavated shell. It is still a neat shell for the price.
