This is one of my favorite buttons of the Civil War! It is the hard rubber style great coat button worn by the United States Navy. This is the pattern illustrated as figure NA137 in Albert's button book and as NA244 in Tice's button book. It has the bold "U.S.N." lettering on the front with the three stars below and the anchor below the stars. It has the four holes in the center that were designed to sew the button on the coat through. On the back of the button it has the cool and correct backmark that reads "NOVELTY RUBBER Co.NEW YORK/ GOODYEAR'S PATENT. 1851". These are a cool button that stands out in any collection.
