This is a tough to find original Civil War 2-piece Virginia sword belt buckle. This is a variation of the belt buckle of the type that is illustrated as Plate #418 on page #226 of the Mullinax book on Confederate Belt Buckles & Plates. This one has the band on the top that isn't close to the ends of the leafs. and bottom are unadorned like the ones in the books. This is the style that was finely crafted for the well-to-do Virginians before the war and this style has been excavated in Civil War Confederate campsites and positions. It has fine detail to the center disk of the buckle with the Virginia seal. The Virginia seal which shows Virtus holding a spear in one hand and a sword in the other hand. She is standing with Tyranny at her feet. It also has the motto of Virginia around the edge of "SIC SEMPER TYRANNIS" which is Latin and translates as "Thus unto tyrants". It has the disk is soldered into place on the tongue bar. As you can imagine these broke quite easily which only adds to their low survival rate. This particular version is quite distinctive because of the very wide wreath and the flat style construction of the back of the buckle. The wreath has the oak leaf design. The wreath has the assembly number "3" stamped into the brass. The tongue has the "65" stamped into it. This is where they were hand fitted at the factory and it also lets us know that they are the not the ones that left the factory together. The verbal history is that the tongue was found in Stafford, Virginia and the wreath was found in Lexington, Virginia. This buckle came from the award winning collection of Don Phillips. His Confederate Belt Buckle display won numerous awards at the biggest Civil War shows across the country. This is your chance to own a buckle from his "Best of Show" award winning collection. This is a very nice looking original Virginia state seal 2-piece sword belt buckle.
