This is a very cool piece of Confederate currency! It is an original 1862
dated 25 cent note issued by the firm of G.W. Holt of New Orleans. Holt ran a coffee house and apparently
issued more notes than he could possibly redeem. He is mentioned in New Orleans
newspaper articles as having been brought into court on at least two occasions
after the city's capture because he could not redeem notes presented for
redemption. He appears after the war in Mobile, AL, living with a relative. In
the center of the note it has the image of the dog guarding the treasury safe. This one has the
nice orange red ink "25 CENTS" printed on the note. The note is correctly hand
signed and numbered. It also has the printed date of issuance of January 1st
1862. This is a good looking piece of currency from one of the Civil War
businesses of New Orleans.
