This is a button that was used by the artillery of the state of New York after the Civil War. It is the pattern listed as NY20 in Albert's button book. The face of the button has a beautiful flying eagle with a shield coming from her beak. Above her it has the "EXCELSIOR" motto and around the bottom it has "NATIONAL GUARD". The ribbon below the shield has the "N.Y.S.A." for New York State Artillery. It has the original back and shank present are present as you see in the picture. This Scovill Company version wasn't made until after the Civil War which is why it is much more affordable than the Civil War ones. This is a very nice displaying non-excavated coat button.
