This is an original Civil War infantry tactics manual that is identified to the soldier who carried it. On one of the inside pages it has the name of "Sergt F.H. Garretson Co. A. 136th Regt. P.V." nicely written in ancient brown ink. The records show that he enlisted on August 14th 1862 at the rank of private of the 136th Pennsylvania Infantry. He mustered out of service on May 29th 1863 at Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. He was promoted to the rank of Sergeant on March 12th 1863. This Regiment fought bravely during the battle of Fredericksburg. The book itself is the 1862 edition of the second volume of Infantry Tactics manual of Silas Casey. This one was printed by Van Nostrand of New York in 1862. It still has a most of the pull-out diagrams and pages intact but has lost a few over the years. You can tell that this book was carried and used. It is a great piece from the Keystone state.
