Autograph with Rank of Union General Alpheus S. Williams of Michigan

Here is a fine original ink autograph of Union General Alpheus Starkey Williams (September 29, 1810 " December 21, 1878). Williams was born on September 29th 1810 in Deep River,Connecticut. He graduated Yale University an d moved to Detroit in 1836. When the Civil War broke out he trained soldiers and was made a Brigadier General May 17th 1861. He served with the Army of the Potomac. His command saw action in the battles of Antietam, Chancellorsville and was important at Gettysburg. If the fall of 1863 he was sent west to Tennessee and then joined Sherman's Atlanta Campaign. He was wounded int he arm at the Battle of New Hope Church on May 26th 1864. He was promoted to Brevet Major General on January 12th 1865. Williams ran for Michigan's Governorship in 1870 but lost. He did serve in Congress for three years. He died on December 21st 1878 and is buried in Detroit. The autograph is trimmed from a military document and is clearly dated September 15th 1864. It is signed "A.S. Williams Brig. Gen. Commd. Div.". The paper measures 3-5/8ths inches by 2-5/8ths inches in size. It is accompanied by a modern made xerox copy of William in his uniform.
