This is a great naval item from the early 1800's. This is an original iron pike. You often hear these referred to as being "trench spears" or "boarding pikes". These were popular from the earliest days of close quarter combat. This fierce weapon measures 89 inch in overall length. The original wooden shaft still retains a good amount of the original paint that is cover by an ancient coat of white pain. The metal portion measures 15 inches in overall length with the blade making up 6 of those inches. These were used for up close combat when the ships were side by side and the sailors were boarding the other ship, hence the name boarding pike. They were also used occasionally by ground troops as a regular spear. This one is in superb shape with nice color all over and has never been cleaned or polished. This is a neat looking piece!
