This is an excellent excavated Confederate belt buckle. This is the pattern that is known to collectors as the "Gutter Back" style frame belt buckle. They have no moving parts and were therefore very durable and effective. On the one side of the buckle it has the "gutter" indentation that would have made the buckle more durable and is what gives them their nickname. They were worn by the regular fighting men of the Civil War. This is the pattern that is illustrated as figure #171 in the Mullinax buckle book. This one is in attractive excavated condition with a chocolate brown patina all over. This beautiful belt buckle was part of the award winning collection of Joe Haile from Tennessee. It is a great looking untouched Confederate frame style belt buckle.
