This is an attractive original Colt revolver known to collectors as the "Root” model in the original factory case. This one is .28 caliber and has the classic model 1855 sidehammer design. The action works well on all positions. The original grip is present has a fine furniture grade look to the walnut. The walnut wood still retains a fine amount of the original factory varnish. The serial numbers are all matching and are 25,511 which would have been made in 1860 which was the second to the last year of production for this pattern of revolver. Actually this number would make it one of the very last ones ever made in .28 caliber. They only made these .28 caliber sidehammer Colt revolvers from 1855 until 1861 and they only made a little over 26,000 of them. Across the top of the 3.5 inch barrel is the Colt maker’s mark as well as the Hartford, Connecticut production location. On the side of the frame it still has a fine amount of the original bluing visible. The cylinder is the version that has the flutes. In one of the flutes, you can still see the patent marking. The gun comes encased in the original wooden factory case. The case contains the original tin of percussion caps from the Eley Company of London England. It also has the correct 28 caliber bullet mold with the Colts Patent markings visible. It also has a beautiful original patriotic style powder flask . The body of the flask has the Union style Eagle with the crossed pistols below. Below the pistols it has the banner that reads "E PLURIBUS UNUM". It even has some of the original bullets to round out the display. It isn't often that you see a beautiful gun like this much less one still in the original box. The box has the pretty brownish maroon lining intact and displays quite well. This is a very attractive and complete .28 caliber Colt "Root” Revolver in the factory box.
