Here is an original US model 1816 military rifle. What is special about this one is that it is in the original flintlock configuration. The lock plate has the crisp maker's Mark of the firm of Brooke Evans. According to Flayderman's guide Evans only had a contract for 5,000 of these flintlock muskets and manufactured them between 1825 and 1830. Below the Evans name it has the desirable stamp of "VALLEY FORGE". Behind the hammer it has the vividly clear 1823 production date stamped into the metal. The mechanics of the lock plate work crisply on all positions. It even has an original flint inside the jaw of the hammer. The barrel is full-length with the original front sight intact. At the breech of the barrel it has the "US" stamp as well as the matching and correct 1823 production date stamped into the barrel tang. As you can see, the barrel of the gun still retains a trace amount of the original armory brown finish. The stock of the gun has a very attractive look with a dark patina all over. As you can see the Walnut wood has a very fine grain and a very pleasing appearance. On the flat of the stock opposite the lock plate you can still see the traces of the original inspector cartouche. The stampings are for the gun was approved for military service by the US inspector. On the underside of the gun it has both of the original sling swivels intact and they both pivot. In the channel underneath the barrel it has the original full-length ramrod. The majority of these guns were converted to percussion later on but not this one. It is a beautiful original flintlock in the original flintlock configuration.
