This is a nicely priced original Civil War cartridge box for the cavalry carbine. The leather is still nice and pliable but has been very heavily worn from service. The outer flap still has the original closure tab present. The finial is present but the roller buckles are missing in action. When you raise the outer flap, you are greeted by the inner flap with the ears still on the sides. The inner flap has the desirable maker marking of the Chicopee, Massachusetts firm of Emerson Gaylord. Gaylord made many high quality accoutrements for the Union army. The implement pouch is still present as well on the inside. On the innermost compartment the wooden block still present. It fits the .50 Caliber carbine cartridges. This could have been used with several different carbines including the Maynard, Gallagher or Maynard. It has had both of the loops on the back of the box replaced with a single wide loop. This is a nice looking Civil War cavalry carbine cartridge box that is still affordable. '
