This is a wonderful pair of Civil War gauntlets that belonged to Civil War Brevet Brigadier General Alvin Voris. Voris served as 2nd Lieutenant of the 29th and as Colonel of the 67th Ohio infantry. Voris was wounded in fierce fighting during the battle at Fort Wagner, South Carolina. This is the battle that is most famous for the actions of the 54th Massachusetts, of which the movie Glory was based. When we say he is a "Brevet" Brigadier General this means that because of his service to the country he was awarded the rank as an honor. He was Brevetted Brigadier General on December 8th 1864 and then as Major General on November 15th 1865. This is a beautiful but heavily worn pair of Civil War era gauntlet gloves. These are the classic style of whit leather, fine quality gloves that were worn by well-t-do Union officers during the War. When you look inside the gloves you see that one has the "A.C. VORIS" name in ink. The other glove has another ink inscription that appears to be older. It notes his rank as Colonel which helps us to date the pieces. I found a photograph of General Voris in uniform and he is wearing a pair of gauntlets. There is know way to verify if these are the ones he is wearing but they definitely were his and quite possibly could be those. A xerox image of the photograph of the General accompanies the pieces. This is a great pair of Civil War gauntlets with a rock solid identification.
