This is a very good looking musket for the price! It is an original .69 caliber military musket from the Firm of D. Nippes of Mill Creek, PA. According to Flayderman's guide Nippes made only 5,100 of these muskets, and only made them from 1842 until 1848. The lockplate has the Makers Mark of Nippes of Philadelphia still partially visible in front of the hammer. Behind the hammer it has the 1846 production date. The action works well on both positions. When this one left the arsenal it would have been a flintlock and later it was converted to percussion in the cone in barrel style so it could still be used. This one is converted using a full breech replacement and you can see the line where the new breech joins the old barrel. It is a crude but functiuonal conversion and it has a hand forged hammer and a crude large bolster. It has one of the original sling swivels still intact. It is missing the nose cap band and ramrod but is otherwise complete. he stock has a very pleasing look all over and you can see the inspector cartouches on the flat of the stock opposite of the lockplate. What makes this one special is that the flats of the shoulder stock each have an ornate tack decorations. These style of decorations were often done by the Native Americans. This is a good-looking original military musket that has a very cool conversion that is likely American Indian used.
