This is a very nice looking gun! It is an original .31 caliber Colt revolver. This is the style known to collectors as the Colt model 1849 "pocket” model. They get their nickname of the "pocket" model because of their size in comparison to their contemporary 44 caliber Colt brother the "Dragoon "which is massive in comparison. It fires five shots of .31 caliber from the full-length 5 inch barrel. It has all-matching serial numbers of 248,720, including the wedge. With Mr. Colt’s fine bookkeeping we know that this gun would have been manufactured in 1863. The barrel is full-length at 5 inches and you can clearly read the single line maker’s stamp across the top of the barrel. It reads "ADDRESS COL SAMl Colt NEW-YORK CITY”. New York City was the location of Colt's sales office with the actual production of the gun taking place in Hartford, Connecticut. The cylinder has a very amount of the original stagecoach hold-up scene still visible. Also on the cylinder it has the "COLTS PATENT” mark and the matching serial number. The action works but the timing is a little off at times. The brass of the backstrap and trigger guard still retain a trace amount of the original silver wash from the factory. The original 1-piece walnut wood grips are present on the handle of the gun. There is a repair to the toe of the grip on the left hand side. The gun comes nicely encased in an original wooden case of the era. It has a nice percussion cap tin and the shell pattern powder flask. If you wanted a pretty original 31 caliber Colt revolver in the case than this one is for you.
