Here is a wonderful Civil War personal item from a soldier from Maine. This is one of the brass stencils that would've been used to mark the items owned by the soldier. This one is from a member of the 24th regiment of Maine Infantry. This was owned by Private Simon Nudd. It has his name as well, as the company and Regiment in the Maine Infantry. The piece is constructed of brass that has a tin backing to reinforce the thin brass. It measures 4-3/8ths inches wide and stands 1-3/4ths inches tall. The history shows that Simon Nudd enlisted on October 13th 1863 in the 24th Maine Infantry. The regiment was sent to New Orleans and then fought through the entire siege of Port Hudson, Louisiana. Nudd mustered out of service on August 25th 1863. A brief printout of his service history, as well as that of the 24th Maine Infantry will accompany the piece.
