This is a great looking original autograph of one of the most famous Generals of the Civil War. It is a fine signature of Union General William Tecumseh Sherman. The autograph is on a pre-printed piece of paper that has the blanks filled in with fine brown ink. It is dated from May 10th 1864 and states that it is for "commutation of rations while on detached service as Mail Messenger at Headquarters Dept. & Army of the Tenn...." at Nashville, for Private David Crankshaw, Co. F, 49th IL Volunteers. Manuscript explanation notes: "...he was continually travelling on the Rail Road between Huntsville Ala. & Nashville Tenn. in charge of Military Mail." It is boldly and signed by "W.T. Sherman," and has the rank just below of Major General Commanding. The paper that the signature is on measures approximately 7-3/4ths inches by 9-3/4ths inches in overall size. It has a nice large modern made image of Sherman in uniform. This one is ready to frame and hang on your relic room wall.
