I love the look of this sword! It isn't often these days that you see a sword that is completely untouched after 150 years. This sword has that look. It has the thick coat of patina that looks like it was brought home from the war and hung on the wall untouched for all the years. This sword is a very finely crafted high grade officers sword that would've been worn by a well-to-do Union officer. The blade of the sword is still full-length at 32 inches. It is one of the high-quality blades that were manufactured in silage in, Germany by the firm of W. Clauberg and has their maker's Mark as well as the knight in armor trademark at the base of the blade. Each side of the blade has the etching that has the gold wash applied to bring out the detail. The front side of the blade has the Union Eagle with the "E Pluribus Unum" national motto on the ribbon coming from her beak. The back side of the blade has the beautiful ornate "US" lettering in the middle. The guard of the sword as well as the pommel cap are also a very high quality manufacture. In addition to the fine casting you can see that each of the pieces have the extra hand chisel work to add more detail to each piece. The handle of the sword is original and still beautifully intact and is constructed of a two-piece design of German silver. The sword is accompanied by the original scabbard that is also constructed with superb quality. The body of the scabbard is silvered copper with the ornate heavy mounts and drag constructed of brass. The mounts and drag have the matching floral designs. The original throat is still intact at the top of the scabbard. As you can see, this sort displays beautifully from all angles. It is truly a Civil War work of art.
