This is an original 1864 dated Civil War mounted artillery saber and scabbard. This one has a full-length blade with the maker marks at the base. It has the maker’s mark of " AMES MFg. CHICOPEE MASS.” on the base of the back of the blade. Ames was the premiere maker of these artillery sabers during the Civil War. The front of the blade has the " US” mark as well as the inspector initials of "G.W.S.”. This is the initials of the man who inspected swords for the U.S. Government, George W. Sherman. You can also clearly see the stamped "1864” Production date. The original guard and pommel cap are present and have a nice color to the brass. The edge of the pommel cap has the "JH" inspector initials still partially visible. When we acquired this sword, the handle was worn down to the original wooden core. We had the leather and the entire double twisted brass wire restored so it displays like what would have originally been present when it left the factory. The sword is accompanied by an original Ames scabbard but it is the early pattern with the internal spring instead of the standard throat. This is a good looking Civil War artillery saber and it has a Civil War production date.
