Here is a piece that you seldom see offered these days. This is the original rifle bayonet that was designed to go on the end of the pattern 1858 Enfield naval rifle. They are officially known as the Enfield style pattern 1859 Cutlass bayonet. They were designed for the end of the gun to be used as a bayonet but are also fully functional as a naval Cutlass. The blade is full-length at 26-3/4th inches and as you can see the blade has a very pleasing ancient look all over. At the base of the blade it has the "AC" and the scales maker's mark. This is the maker marking of the famous German swordmaker Alexander Coppel. Even though these Enfield Cutlass bayonets were English almost the entire production of them utilized blades that were made in Solingen, Germany. The handguard of the piece is made of iron and it still has perfect shape like it did the day it left the factory. The handles on these pieces were formed using pressed leather and this one has both pieces intact and in nice condition. The original retaining spring is present on the handle as well. The Cutlass bayonet is missing the leather scabbard as they so often are. This is a fine original Civil War Enfield Cutlass bayonet.
