This is a nice original non-excavated cross saber hatpin from the Civil War. The cross saber denoted the cavalry branch of service during the Civil War. They were manufactured out of stamped brass. On page #200 of the headgear book by O'Donnell & Campbell this pattern is illustrated as figure #478. They were designed for use on the regulation model 1858 Army hats. This one still has a gorgeous untouched patina all over. On the back of the piece it still retains three of the original four attachments loops. This is the classic style that would have adorned the hat of a Civil War cavalryman.
