This is a beautiful original 1864 dated Civil War mounted artillery saber and scabbard. This one has a full-length blade with the maker marks at the base. It has the arch style maker’s mark of " AMES MFg. CHICOPEE MASS.” on the base of the back of the blade. Ames was the premiere maker of these artillery sabers during the Civil War. The front of the blade has the " US” mark as well as the inspector initials of "G.W.S.”. This is the initials of the man who inspected swords for the U.S. Government, George W. Sherman. You can also clearly see the stamped "1864” Production date. There are some battle nicks along the edge of the blade that give it character. The original guard and pommel cap are present and have a nice color to the brass. The edge of the pommel cap has the "JH" inspector initials still visible. On the handle it has the original leather grip and double twisted brass wire and it displays well as you can see. The sword is accompanied by a nice original metal scabbard with both mounts intact as well as the throat at the top. On the side of the drag at the bottom of the sword scabbard it has the traces of the inspector initials stamped into the metal. This is a fine looking Civil War artillery saber with scabbard and it has a Civil War production date.
