This is a tough to find bayonet! It is the saber style bayonet illustrated as figure #4 on page 207 of Janzen's bayonet book. He lists them as the model 1861 U.S. Navy Rifle saber bayonet. They are very distinctive because of the large barrel opening that accepts the large bore of the model 1861 navy rifle made by the Whitney Company that is known to collectors as the Plymouth Navy Rifle. The rifle and bayonet were designed for Admiral J.A. Dahlgren who also developed the cannon that bore his name. The blade is full-length at 22-1/2 inches. It has the maker mark of the Hartford, Connecticut firm of Collins and Company at the base of the blade. The blade has a fine look as you can see but displays well. The brass handle is complete with a great look and on the top of the handle it has the serial number of "5090". These were hand fitted to the end of the gun and it would have had a matching serial number on the gun. The locking spring is still present and complete on the handle as well and it is fully functional. On the back of the handle it has the "F.C.W." stamping. These are the inspector initials of the U.S. Ordnance Department inspector who approved the bayonet for military use, Frank C. Warner. On the left hand side of the handle it has the small anchor stamping where it was inspected by the Navy. What makes this one special is that it is accompanied by the original leather and brass scabbard. The scabbard still has the belt frog stud intact on the top mount. The leather is missing the drag and has some leather loss with nice honest wear from service. This is a very nice and scarce Civil War brass handled saber bayonet with the original scabbard.
