What a nice excavated coat size Civil War Infantry button. The face of the button has the spread-wing eagle with the standard shield on its chest. This denotes the it was for the General Services. These are the buttons that were worn by the regular fighting men of the Civil War. The original back and shank are intact. It has the correct Civil War era "*STEELE & / JOHNSON” backmark. These buttons are much tougher to find than most of the backmarks you encounter. This is a great looking Civil War 21mm uniform button. The verbal history that accompanied this button is that it was recovered years ago in the town of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Here is a great looking dug Civil War general service eagle button.
