This is an authentic excavated Civil War U.S. cartridge box plate. This would have adorned the front of a soldier’s cartridge box at one time. The weight of the plate helped to keep the outer flap of the cartridge box closed. It has a vividly clear "US” on the brass face of the plate. The back of the plate has a superb amount of the lead still remaining. You can see that both of the original iron attachment loops are present on the back of the plate. These iron loops would have held the plate onto the cartridge box at one time. If I correctly remember the verbal history that accompanied this piece it was recovered in the area of Kennesaw Mountain, Georgia. Kennesaw was one of the fierce battles where the Confederates attempted to keep the Union army from reaching Atlanta. It will enhance any Civil War artifact collection.
