Here is a good looking original 5 inch barrel length version .31 caliber Colt revolver. This is the classic version known to collectors as the model 1849 Colt. Everything except for the cylinder has matching serial numbers, except for the replacement original cylinder wedge of 205,925. Thanks to Mr. Colt’s bookkeepers we know that this would have been made in the middle of 1862. The brass trigger guard and backstrap have a great look to the brass that still retains a beautiful honey color to the brass. It has both of positions on the mechanics but it no longer has the main spring. The original 1-piece wood grips are present with an attractive dark tone to the walnut. A fine amount of the original factory varnish is still hanging onto the wood. The cylinder retains a small amount of the cylinder scene and the serial number marking. The cylinder scene depicts a stagecoach hold-up scene. What makes this one extra special is the cylinder. One of the chambers of the cylinder has exploded. You can see that the explosion was strong enough to blow out the wall and you can see the split clearly. One of the other chambers still has the bullet inside. The top of the barrel has a clear single line Samuel Colt maker’s mark and New York office location These were made at the Hartford, Connecticut production location. The Colt’s Patent mark is visible on both the frame to go along with the barrel markings. This is a good looking 1862 production Civil War .31 caliber Colt revolver with the cool exploded cylinder.
