Here is a great displaying piece! This is the large eagle insignia that would have adorned the front of a shako or pith style helmet from the late Indian war time frame until the Spanish American war. Behind the shield it has the crossed rifle design which lets us know it was worn by a member of the infantry branch of service. It is large in size measuring 4-3/4ths inches by 4 inches in overall size. It is made of gold gilded stamped brass. It still has three of the four original attachment loops intact on the reverse. The Union eagle has the shield on her chest with the arrows of war in one talon and the branch of peace in the other. This is one of the hat plates that were bought by the large surplus dealer, Francis Bannerman of New York. His company. He bought the pieces from the government and sold them on up until the 1960’s. If it wasn't for Bannerman we wouldn't have many of the great military artifacts we enjoy today.
