This is a good-looking original Civil War dated cavalry saber. This is the classic model 1860 that was carried by the Union cavalryman during the Civil War and is the style most people associate with the war between the states. The sword has a full-length blade with the remnants of the production date stamped at the base. If you look closely it appears to be an 1864 date but you can't see enough to say 100% for sure. You can also see the "US” marking. The back of the blade has the desirable arch style maker’s mark of the Ames Manufacturing Company of Chicopee, Massachusetts. Ames was the foremost maker of Civil War swords and sabers for the Union government. The guard and pommel cap have a great color and look to the brass. On the top of the pommel cap you can see the inspector initials of "J.H.” and "C.E.W.'. These are the initials of the government inspectors that approved the word for military service. The original leather is present on the handle. The wire wrap on the handle is original to the sword and displays quite well. It is accompanied by the original metal scabbard. The scabbard has the rings, mounts, drag and throat intact. This is a nice looking authentic Ames made cavalry saber and scabbard.
