This is an original excavated Civil War New Hampshire state seal coat button. It has fine detail and a nice amount of the gold gilt remaining on the face. The face of the button has the New Hampshire state seal. The seal shows the New Hampshire ship builders building the frigate "Raleigh" for the Continental United States Navy at Portsmouth. In the background it has the sun rising up over the water. It makes a beautiful scene and this one displays quite well. It has very faint traces of the gold gilding in the protected areas of the button's face. The back and shank are present. This is the tougher to find version that was made without a maker marking on the reverse. They did this so the retailer could sell the button without advertising for the actual maker. This is the style listed as NH6 in Albert's book and NH200a6 in Tice's book. The verbal history that accompanied this piece is that it was found in Culverton, Virginia years ago. This is a fine piece all the way around that will make a solid addition to your collection.
