This is a tough piece to find. It is an excellent authentic non-excavated brass horn hat insignia from the Civil War. These were made by stamping out the insignia from a piece of flat brass. This is a variation of the version that is illustrated as Figure #484 on page #203 of the headgear insignia book by O'Donnell and Campbell. It is the version of horn that denotes service in the rifleman branch of service. They date them as being made from 1850 until 1861. It is the style that is made without the rope tassels and has the horn that is ornamented with ornate bell design. This one has both of the two original prongs intact on the back of the horn. The horn measures 3-1/2 inches by 1-1/2 inches across. This is a fantastic piece of Civil War history.
