This is a very nice 6th plate tintype image of a Civil War era soldier. These ambrotype images were produced on a glass plate. This is the size that is referred to by collectors as the sixth plate which is 2 - 5/8ths inches by 2.5 inches in overall size. This image is nice and you can clearly see the detail. The image shows the waist up view of a musician. He is wearing civilian clothes except for the military forage cap on his head. What makes the image extra special is what he holds in his hand. He holds the musical instrument known as a sax-horn. These were popular during the Civil War with musicians. They were played with the bell pointing backwards so the troops in the marching line could hear them better. It isn’t often that you see them in a photograph and this one is in fine clear shape. The image comes in a full case that is leatherette in construction. This is a nice looking ambrotype image with superb content!
