This is the sword belt style buckle that saw service for the U.S. military after the Civil War. The design in the center of the plate is almost identical to the Civil War buckle but the overall construction is different. The face of the plate has the spread wing Union eagle with the arrows of war in one talon and the branch of peace in the other. There is the ribbon coming from the mouth of the eagle that has the motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM”. Around the eagle it has the wreath design. The buckle is made out of a thin stamped brass with traces of the original gold gilding to the face. On the back of the buckle it has the attachment loop and hook that are still present. This is a very pretty buckle that is very affordable as well.
