Here is a beautiful uniform button from the Palmetto state. This is the version that is listed as SCP296As1 in Tice's button book. This is the 15mm version of the button that was worn by the Charleston, South Carolina City Police. As Tice states in the book "Collectors have excavated several 1850's Charleston police buttons from Confederate campsites." The buttons are beautifully design with the Charleston City coat of arms in the center. This small size button is made like the coat size buttons except they are made without the wording that reads "CHARLESTON" and on the bottom is "POLICE". On the reverse of the button it has the original back and shank intact. These buttons were made the Waterbury Connecticut firm of Scovill and it has their maker's marking still partially visible. This is a very cool button in nice excavated condition.
