This is a great looking sword from all angles! This is the U.S. model 1860 staff & field officer's sword. The name is deceiving because only a small handful were made before the Civil War ended and the majority were made from 1870 until about 1900 or so. This is the higher grade that was presented as a token of honor and esteem. This one has the full-length blade with the large "US" lettering on one side and the other has the partial owner's name engraved into the metal but not enough to read. At the base of the blade it has the maker's name etched into the metal. This is the marking of the Chicago, Illinois company of James H. Hirsch & Sons. The handle is intact and as you can see it is in excellent condition. This is the high grade construction which is a step or two above the ones that you usually encounter. The back side of the hand guard is the style that folds down when it is in use. The sword is accompanied by the original scabbard that has the extremely ornate mounts and drag. The throat is missing in action. This is a great looking sword and scabbard.
