This is a beautiful original Civil War saber bayonet & scabbard. This pattern was used on the end of the 2-band style Enfield rifles. They were designed so they could be used as a bayonet on the end of the gun or they could be removed and used as a saber for up close fighting. Thus they got the name of a saber-bayonet. They attached to the stud on the end of the barrel and this one still has the spring on the end that held it in place. The blade is full-length with a light tone. It has remnants of an "A" marking at the base of the blade. The only other markings are on the top of the handle where it has the "G301" stamping. The scabbard has a fine look with nice black leather. The stitching is solid as a rock and displays well. As if that wasn’t enough it has the original white buff leather frog present at the top that attached the bayonet & scabbard to the soldier’s belt. Most of the time this is missing in action. This is a nice example and will make a solid addition to your collection.
