This is an intimidating looking pistol. This is the beautifully manufactured French Marine pattern pistol of the model 1822. This gun fires a massive .70 caliber bullet from the 7.9" round smooth bore barrel that is octagonal at the breech. At the breech of the barrel it is proof marked with the inspector stampings. The gun would have been converted to percussion because it was originally manufactured as a flintlock pistol. The tang of the barrel has the model marking of "1822 T,". The gun still retains the original front and rear sites. On the lock plate of the gun it is nicely converted from flint, and the lockplate is engraved "Mre Rle / de Charleville;". The action of the lock plate works crisply on all positions. It has a very attractive original one piece walnut stock that displays beautifully with the brass and iron furniture. It has the lanyard ring still present on the bottom of the grip cap. The gun is nice and complete with the iron ramrod underneath. This is an attractive well used example of a scarce early Marine pistol from the famous Charleville Arsenal.
