This is a nice and complete Civil War era gun with a nice mark! It is an original .34 caliber single shot pistol of the style that is known to collectors as the "Underhammer” pistol. They are designed with the hammer being located underneath the barrel. It protected the hammer well but made it hard to cock and also to keep the percussion cap in place when you readied the gun for firing. This one measures about 7 inches in overall length with the barrel making up 3 of those inches. The top of the part octagonal and part round barrel has the mark of "CAST STEEL BACON & CO NORWICH C-T" still clearly visible. According to Flayderman's guide there were only about 500 of these guns made. The underside of the barrel has the "79" assembly number clearly visible. The original 2-piece wooden handle is intact with a nice look. The mechanics of the gun still cock back and holds in place just as it should. This is a neat gun all the way around and it is in nice shape.
